Write Whatever You Want?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits. It’s a meme where participants discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts. Details on suggesting topics and downloading the official header images, as well as an updated archive with the latest topics can be found on Aria’s blog.

Prompts for this week: Can bloggers just write whatever they want? Or are there boundaries they should respect even on their own platform? If a blogger is called out for something they post, are they obligated to respond?

Yes, bloggers can write whatever they want. But then, of course, they must deal with the consequences of what they write. This is true in blogging as with everything else in life.

No, they are not obligated to respond when called out. But again, they must deal with the consequences of not responding. This, too, is true in blogging as with everything else in life.

It is certainly easier, in many cases, to respect certain boundaries than to deal with the consequences of not having done so. But it also very much depends on the boundary in question and whether upholding it perpetuates a cycle or system that ought to be disrupted or dismantled. What kind of boundary are we talking about? Does it protect people and preserve their peace, or merely maintain the silence of status quo? Does it show kindness, or complicity? Respect, or fear?

We are all humans, learning as we live, building the bicycle as we ride it, and we are all going to make mistakes. Overstepping boundaries is inevitably one of them. The best we can do is to act from a place of love and kindness and respect for one another, to face up to our mistakes when we make them, and to try to leave things better than we found them.

The rest is just pandering for clicks and posing for cliques.

What do you think?
